The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved significant new infrastructure projects exceeding ₹70 billion for India's rail and road sectors. These initiatives are designed to enhance logistics and connectivity while creating numerous job opportunities.
Among the approved railway ventures are the Ratlam–Nagda (Third and Fourth Lines) and Wardha–Balharshah (Fourth Line) projects. The ₹33.99 billion project will add 176 km of new lines in Maharashtra and MP, boosting freight capacity by 18.4 million tonnes annually. This expansion is crucial for the movement of goods, including industrial supplies and agricultural produce.
Moreover, the improved rail network is also expected to reduce oil imports by 200 million litres and cut CO₂ emissions by 990 million kg, contributing to sustainable development.
In the road sector, a vital four-lane highway between Badvel and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh has received clearance. This 108.134 km stretch, costing ₹36.531 billion, will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. It will drastically cut travel distance to Krishnapatnam Port by 34 km, streamlining truck movement and strengthening connectivity across three key industrial corridors. This enhanced infrastructure is crucial for the region's economic growth.
Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CCEA emphasised that these projects are integral to the PM-Gati Shakti initiative. The focus is on strengthening logistics and regional connectivity through multimodal transport efficiency and sustainable development. These projects are poised to collectively generate over 11.7 million man-days of employment, providing a significant boost to local economies.
