In a big step towards improving the country’s infrastructure and farming systems, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved three important projects worth more than Rs 48,000 crore. These projects include a new six-lane bypass road in Punjab-Haryana, railway line doubling in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and the modernisation of irrigation under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY).
One of the major decisions is to build a new 19.2-km six-lane Zirakpur Bypass. This road will be fully access-controlled and will cost around Rs 18,780 crore. It will help reduce traffic in the busy Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula area.
In addition, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the bypass will improve road connections between Patiala, Delhi, Mohali Aerocity, and even Himachal Pradesh. The project will use the Hybrid Annuity Model for construction. Moreover, it will link NH-7 and NH-5 and become part of the planned ring road under the PM Gati Shakti scheme.
Along with roads, the Cabinet has also approved the doubling of the Tirupati–Pakala–Katpadi railway line. This project will cover 104 km and cost about Rs 13,320 crore.
This railway project will help around 14 lakh people living in 400 villages of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It will make it easier for both passengers and goods to move between places. It will also improve travel to important religious places like Tirumala, Sri Kalahasti, Kanipakam, and Chandragiri.
Furthermore, the project will allow 4 million tonnes of extra goods to be transported every year. It is also expected to save 40 million litres of fuel and cut down carbon emissions by 20 crore kilograms, which is like planting one crore trees.
Perhaps one of the most important moves for farmers is the modernisation of irrigation systems. The Cabinet has approved the upgradation of the Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM) scheme under PMKSY. This scheme will run till 2025–26 and will receive Rs 16,000 crore in funding.
The plan includes building better canal-based irrigation systems and underground pipelines that will carry water directly to farms. In addition, it will promote smart water use with the help of advanced technology.
Also, Water User Societies will take charge of managing these irrigation systems. These groups will get help from Farmer Producer Organisations and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies for at least five years.
Overall, these new steps will help improve road and rail travel, save fuel, boost farming, and increase farmer income.
