The highly anticipated Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway (BCE), aimed at improving connectivity between the two metro cities, is now expected to be completed by June 2026. Initially planned for an August 2025 completion, the project has been delayed due to ongoing construction challenges.
According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), only 71 km of the expressway has been completed so far. While the Karnataka stretch was finished and informally opened for local travel in December 2024, the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu sections remain under construction.
In response to a query from Rajya Sabha MP Lahar Singh Siroya, Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari confirmed that the pending portions of the expressway would require more time and would now be completed by June 2026.
The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is a four-lane, access-controlled highway designed to improve connectivity and reduce travel time between the two cities. Key benefits include:
The expressway’s Karnataka section is divided into three packages:
An NHAI official stated, "The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is a crucial infrastructure project. We are working to expedite the construction process while ensuring high-quality standards."
Meanwhile, a transport expert commented, "The delay in completion may impact businesses and commuters relying on faster connectivity. However, once operational, the expressway will significantly improve travel efficiency."
With the revised deadline set for June 2026, authorities are focusing on expediting work in the pending sections of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The expressway is expected to transform road travel between Bengaluru and Chennai, making it a key infrastructure milestone.
