The much-awaited Belapur to Airoli road project has resumed after years of delays. This 21.12-km-long road aims to provide seamless connectivity from Belapur to Airoli Sector 10A, linking it further to Mulund, Thane, and Mumbai. The final phase of the project, spanning 3.47 km, is expected to be completed by September 2025.
Initially, a 2-km road was planned to connect Ghansoli to Airoli. However, the revised plan extends it to the Airoli-Mulund creek bridge, making the total length 3.47 km. This extension aims to further decongest existing traffic routes and improve access to key areas.
Since a section of the road passes through a mangrove zone, the project was delayed due to environmental concerns. To address this, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) proposed a 1.9-km-long elevated bridge to minimize ecological impact. Additionally, compensatory afforestation is being carried out in Palghar, and necessary approvals have been secured from the forest department, the mangrove conservation committee, and the high court.
According to Shirish Aradwad, City Engineer, “Work on the project has started with all required environmental permissions in place, and soil testing has been completed. The contractor has been instructed to complete the work by September next year.”
The project is estimated to cost ₹550 crore, with half of the funding coming from CIDCO. This investment aims to create a more efficient and congestion-free transport corridor for motorists.
A senior official from CIDCO stated, “This road project is crucial for easing the heavy traffic load on the Thane-Belapur (TB) road. Once completed, it will provide a direct alternative route for daily commuters.”
A spokesperson from NMMC added, “By integrating this road with the Airoli-Mulund bridge and upcoming Airoli-Katai route, we are not only improving local connectivity but also strengthening regional transportation links.”
Motorists currently using the busy TB road to reach Airoli and beyond will soon have a faster alternative. The new road will significantly reduce traffic congestion at Airoli during peak hours and offer a more streamlined travel experience.
Apart from easing daily commutes, this road will also play a vital role in enhancing regional connectivity. It will link to the Navi Mumbai International Airport and integrate with the Coastal Road project from Thane to Sanpada, further boosting mobility in the region.
The Belapur-Airoli road project is a significant step toward improving Navi Mumbai’s infrastructure. With construction progressing as planned, commuters can look forward to reduced travel times and smoother journeys by 2025.
