The Amrit Bharat scheme, launched by the Union Government, is helping speed up railway flyover construction in Dakshina Kannada. The project aims to improve road and rail connectivity while ensuring better safety for passengers and vehicles. Four flyovers are being built between Mangaluru and Subrahmanya under the Mysuru railway division. These flyovers are expected to be completed by March-end.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Amrit Bharat scheme on February 26, 2024. The government has allocated ₹41,000 crore to upgrade railway infrastructure across India. This includes modernising 554 railway stations and constructing 1,500 overbridges and underpasses. As part of this plan, railway flyovers are being built in four locations: Kodimbala (Kadaba taluk), Bajakere (Nekkiladi village), Purusharakatte (Narimogaru village), and Gadipila (Puttur taluk). The total budget for these flyovers is ₹24 crore.
The work at Kodimbala, Bajakere, and Purusharakatte is already 60% complete and is expected to finish by February-end. Meanwhile, the Gadipila flyover is likely to be completed by April. Each flyover will be 6.53 meters high, with a width of 7.5 meters and a length of 10 meters. Concrete access roads will also be built to ensure smooth traffic movement.
Bengaluru-based S V Constructions is handling the project. Although initial delays occurred due to weather conditions, the work is now progressing quickly. In addition, railway electrification and platform elevation in the region are already complete, making rail operations smoother.
Local leader Medappagowda welcomed the project, saying it will reduce long waiting times at railway gates. He credited former MP Nalin Kumar Kateel for pushing this initiative and urged the current MP, Capt. Brijesh Chowta, to bring more railway developments to the region.
Meanwhile, project engineer Govardhan Reddy confirmed that the construction team is working hard to complete the flyovers on time, following the railway department’s guidelines. With these flyovers, travel in Dakshina Kannada is set to become safer and more convenient.
