The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority ( GMDA) has proposed five new underpasses along the Gurugram Metro route to reduce traffic congestion at key junctions. The move aims to ensure smoother traffic movement, especially for heavy vehicles like trucks used for commercial purposes in the city.
The proposed underpasses will be built at critical points to improve connectivity. These locations include:
GMDA officials have estimated a total expenditure of ₹500 crore for the construction of these underpasses. The funds will be allocated for infrastructure development in high-traffic areas along the metro line.
"The construction of these underpasses will significantly reduce congestion and improve the overall flow of traffic, particularly benefiting commercial vehicles like trucks," said a senior GMDA official.
The proposal for the underpasses will be presented for approval at the upcoming GMDA meeting on April 23, which Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will chair. The underpasses will be constructed in the second phase of the metro construction, carried out by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL).
The GMDA intends to integrate the underpasses with the metro line to minimise traffic disruptions. "We plan to get these underpasses constructed as depot work and have asked GMRL to take up the construction," the official added.
In addition to the new underpasses, a previously approved underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk will also be built as part of the metro project. GMRL has already prepared the design for this underpass.
As Gurugram continues to grow, improving infrastructure to accommodate commercial vehicles and metro traffic is essential. The underpasses will be designed to ease everyday traffic and support the movement of heavy-duty vehicles. Like Trucks, which are frequently used for construction and agricultural commercial work in the region.
This project is part of GMDA's broader Comprehensive Mobility Plan aimed at creating a seamless urban transit system for the rapidly developing city.
