The Gujarat government has approved a Rs. 2,200 crore upgrade to Ahmedabad’s SP Ring Road to ease traffic congestion. The project will widen the 76-km stretch into a six-lane highway, improving traffic flow and reducing bottlenecks at key junctions.
The upgrade includes rebuilding bridges over the Sabarmati River at Bhat and Komod and adding improvements at busy junctions. The plan aims to reduce long-standing traffic issues on one of the city's busiest roads.
The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) revised the initial six-laning plan. Instead of acquiring new land, they will expand the existing road to six lanes. This approach minimizes environmental impact and avoids displacement.
The project will add four new underpasses at critical intersections, including Aslali, Chiloda, and Bhat. The location of the fourth underpass is still to be determined. Construction work has already started on the Ognej underpass and Sindhu Bhavan junction flyover, funded by loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Currently, SP Ring Road has 16 bridges, including two over rivers. After the upgrades, the road will feature a total of 34 flyovers and underpasses, significantly improving traffic flow and safety.
The six-lane expansion, new underpasses, and rebuilt bridges will enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and improve the quality of life for commuters in Ahmedabad. The SP Ring Road upgrade reflects the city’s commitment to better urban infrastructure.
