A major infrastructure development is underway as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced plans for a new 220-km high-speed greenfield highway between Murshidabad in West Bengal and Kishanganj in Bihar. This modern highway project is part of India's broader mission to enhance connectivity and ease logistics in the eastern corridor of the country.
NHAI has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) in June 2025, inviting consultants to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this ambitious greenfield route. Unlike typical highway upgrades, this project involves a completely new road alignment to ensure long-term sustainability and smoother traffic flow.
The highway will be designed as a 4-lane carriageway with paved shoulders, capable of supporting fast-moving traffic, including large goods vehicles. This project is expected to benefit regional truck operators, as the new road will reduce delays, fuel consumption, and vehicle wear-and-tear by offering a seamless and high-speed route.
Consultants bidding for the project are required to assess feasibility from technical, economic, and environmental angles. They must also plan for resettlement, land acquisition, and carry out safety and quality audits. The DPR must be completed within 365 days from the contract signing.
Key dates include the pre-bid meeting on 25 June 2025, and the final bid submission by 10 July 2025. Bids will be judged solely on technical scores, and only firms registered on the INFRACON portal can participate.
Though no ministerial statement was released, an official from NHAI confirmed that this project is a step toward building “a high-speed, safe, and future-ready highway that aligns with India’s modern transport vision.”
The new highway aims to strengthen trade, improve truck movement across state borders, and support economic growth in the India–Bangladesh border region.
This highway, once completed, is expected to become a key freight and passenger corridor, reducing travel time and improving safety for all types of vehicles, especially heavy trucks carrying goods across states.
